Van Gogh used many different drawing materials: ink, chalk, pencil, charcoal, watercolours, oils and fixative. He sometimes used just one type, but he would also combine drawing materials in one drawing.

In general, my favorite brands are Prismacolor, Caran d'Ache, Faber-Castell, and Derwent. They have proven track records and offer high-quality artist grade products. Because different colored pencils of every type can be used together on the same artwork, you needn't feel pressured to pick a brand and stick to it.

Pigment density. The more expensive the art supply is, the more pigment it will have in it. That goes for colored pencils, pastels, water-colors, acrylics, oils, everything. Pigment is expensive, and that is what you are paying for.
